MCPG Frankfurt 2016

BUG GIRL by Benjamin Harper and Sarah Hines Stephens, illustrated by Anoosha Syed
Imprint

Get ready for a new illustrated middle grade series that's going to have people buzzing in Frankfurt!  Even though bugs give me the creepy crawlies, I love this action-packed story starring a nerdy-girl-turned-superhero. With funny sidekicks, an insane villain and entertaining bug facts throughout, BUG GIRL has it all.  And now I think bugs are actually really cool!

SPILL ZONE by Scott Westerfeld, illustrated by Alex Puvilland
First Second

Scott Westerfeld's long-awaited graphic novel is finally here. And it's been worth the wait!  This is a must-read and I can't say it any better than Marissa Meyer: “A little dark, a little twisted, and completely enthralling...”  It's a wild, edgy, near-future ride, brilliantly brought to life by Alex Puvilland.

THE DOLL'S EYE by Marina Cohen
Roaring Brook Press

If you are easily spooked, I don't recommend reading this one at night!  A creepy and totally original middle grade story about an old house with lots of secrets and a mysterious dollhouse with magic dolls. With echoes of Edgar Allen Poe and Coraline, this is a cautionary tale about being careful what you wish for.  It's horror with heart!  And has an unforgettable ending!

Miriam's Picks

TRAITOR'S KISS by Erin Beaty
Imprint

Blockbuster Alert! The narrative voice intrigued me from the start, and the compelling characters and twists and turns of the plot kept me hooked right to the end. I love any story with secret identities, and there are plenty to be found here, along with devious political machinations, multilayered surprises, and tempestuous, tantalizing romance. This is the first in a trilogy that's set to explode as one of our biggest lead titles for Spring 2017.

NOISY NIGHT by Mac Barnett, illustrated by Brian Biggs
Roaring Brook Press

What are those pesky neighbors of yours up to? This dynamic duo teams up for an imaginative exploration of who is making all that noise. I am a huge fan of this book's unusual format, which travels upwards as you turn the pages. Mac Barnett is clever as always, and his text gets a brilliant complement with Brian Biggs' bold, vibrant art. Noisy Night is filled with charm, humor, and great details.

BLOOMING AT THE TEXAS SUNRISE MOTEL by Kimberly Willis Holt
Henry Holt Books for Young Readers

Kimberly Willis Holt is a fantastic writer who's proven herself over and over - her books have been bestsellers, won the National Book Award and Amazon Best Best Book of the Year, and earned phenomenal praise from outlets as varied as USA Today and The New York Times Book Review. She's back with a story that delves deep into the universal themes of family, loss, and finding a place to call home. This is a powerful middle-grade novel that blooms into something truly lovely.

Madison's Picks

COUNT ALL HER BONES by April Henry
Henry Holt Books for Young Readers

The queen of teen mystery thrillers is at the top of her game with this highly-anticipated sequel to Girl, Stolen, the book that made readers fall in love with April Henry six years ago. For fans new and old, this edge-of-your seat thriller will have you dying to know if blind Cheyenne can outsmart her captors a second time. If you never read Girl, Stolen, start there and pick these up as duology that won't disappoint!

THE TIME MUSEUM by Matthew Loux
First Second

If you've ever wished that Hogwarts had a sister school for time travel, then this is the graphic novel for you. Join Delia as she competes against kids from all across history for a coveted internship at the Time Museum. Gorgeous artwork made me feel like I was navigating the Library of Alexandria and futuristic London to save the Time Museum from a mysterious threat!
ANOTHER WAY TO CLIMB A TREE by Liz Garton Scanlon, illustrated by Hadley Hooper
Roaring Brook Press

Fans of Hadley Hooper (The Iridescence of Birds) won't want to miss this next picture book collaboration. Hooper's signature soft brushstrokes give life to Garton Scanlon's story of a little girl who finds an imaginative way to climb trees while sick in bed. I found myself poring over the artwork, amazed at Hooper’s talent for playing with light and shadows.
